With over 28 years as a controller in air traffic control, Nicky Patterson was well-qualified to give us a fascinating talk about her work with NATS (formerly National Air Traffic Control Service). After attending a college for appropriate training, Nicky began her time as a controller at Birmingham before moving up to the much busier airport in Manchester,
She explained the differences between the two types of air traffic control – that which looks after aircraft flying at a high level over the country and that which is responsible for activities at individual airports. At Manchester, Nicky and her colleagues control both ground movements and the immediate area with incoming and departing aircraft.
She explained the qualities which are looked for in an air traffic controllers – procrastinators and ditherers need not apply! Apparently, provided we fit the bill, we should all be okay – they are currently advertising for controllers and there is no age limit!
